Progetto "Formula 1 - Anno Zero" - La mia tesi in Car Design

PROJECT "FORMULA 1 - YEAR ZERO" - My Degree thesis in Car Design

This is the thesis that gave me the degree in Car Design with top marks. It's the result of a careful analysis around possible changing of the regulations about engineering of Formula 1 bodyworks.
The purpose is to express the maximum aerodynamic efficiency through more simple shapes, along with the introduction of important enhancements about safety performance.
Part of this work came 7 years before some of the new rules approved in 2009!
As a matter of fact, here is the list of the new features: no more grooves on the tyres and return to slick technology; enlargement of front wing; cancellation of the "gap" about geometry of front wings, that allowed the design of concave surfaces; simplified shapes of the bodywork, from the zone around the front air intakes down to the tail of the airscoop.
Moreover, the thesis suggests solutions to improve the passive safety of the vehicle, from the geometry of monocoque around driving seat, to the influence on dynamics of crash events.
An important notice: despite it's an "old" book indeed, this thesis could still represent a possible way of evolution of the current rules.
Only the Italian version of the document is available.

Anticipate alcune soluzioni Ferrari e Lamborghini

FVJ and GOEMON come before Ferrari and Lamborghini about some aerodynamic devices.

When Ferrari announced for early 2013 the World Premiere of Enzo successor, I felt the curiosity to compare that project with mine; I also wanted the Internet People to do the same, thus I worked to publish my documents in the shortest time. I wished the new Ferrari to be presented at Geneva instead of Detroit, in order to have some more weeks to spread my brochure.
I published the presentation of FVJ on Issuu.com website on January 18th, 2013; on January 26th I started up this blog; meanwhile, I worked on the Goemon concept, dedicated to Lamborghini, which features and develops the same aerodynamic features, then it was released on February 22nd.
The unveiling of the new LaFerrari was on March 6th; the day before, Lamborghini did the same for the Veneno.
In the supercar from Sant’Agata, I noticed a deflector before the front wheels, which strongly looks like a device on the sides of my Goemon, just before the rear wheels (see ref. No. 4). The purpose of this element is to reduce the air flow under the car as well as the turbulences, but I’m not sure it’s the same goal of Lamborghini’s engineers.
A much bigger surprise came when I saw LaFerrari: the design is mainly influenced by a continuous path of the air flow, which starts from the front, it goes between the windscreen and the wheel housing, then gets into the big air intake (No. 1) then it comes out through exhaust holes on the engine bonnet (No. 2), and finally it gives the rear wing (embodied in the coachwork) an additional load.
On the doors, it’s easy to detect an outline (No. 3), which recalls the typical deflectors of Formula 1, positioned before the side air intakes.
To see many points in common with my projects means that I had good design ideas, but there’s also a technical value inside, and this is especially what I care about.

GOEMON Concept: from Ferrari FVJ to Lamborghini

Sharp like the sword of a great Samurai, starring in a famous cartoon series.
I have chosen this name for a new research on aerodynamics, which starts from the contents of Ferrari FVJ, by transferring the results into the typical Lamborghini style.
These are just the first drawings that describe the essence of the project, without any technical description.
Through the Goemon Concept, I wanted to go beyond the results achieved with the Ferrari prototype, thus I added an evolution step: as a matter of fact, on the front bonnet a triple wing surface is visible.
I think it's an unprecedented solution, that increases the surface which generates the downforce, but also it reduces the turbulences and makes the air flow more regular.
To reach this purpose, the two side wings feature a "neutral" cross section, but only the one in the middle has the typical shape designed for downforces.
The choice of a name out of the tradition of bullfights recalls the hystorical exception of the Countach, which is even a wonder exclamation taken from popular language in the Italian region of Piemonte. The style of that car was a revolution in the culture of design, but also my “little” Goemon wants to show worldwide the peculiar feature of the triple wing, which deserves to pass through experimental tests to check the real efficiency.

Progetto FVJ: una Ferrari con aerodinamica da F1

ENGLISH VERSION

FVJ project: a Ferrari prototype styled on F1 aerodynamics

Many extreme supercars have been defined as "Road Formula Ones", but I think there is still the
chance to refine the aerodynamic research to make it more strongly related to the world of competitions.
Through the drawings of my concept, I show a way to create a strong interaction between the external and the inner air flow, thus the whole layout recalls the typical shapes of a Formula 1 car.
As a natural consequence, my project share some common lines with the Ferrari Enzo, but the research on aerodynamics, both on the general style as well as in the details, is inspired to the inventions of Formula 1 engineers, who always move through the restrictions of rules.
I had no enough time to make a deep design research towards futuristic solutions, so the final result is quite a contemporary styling, but what is brand new is the strong technical influence.
I was born in Modena, where I currently live and work; this is my personal tribute to a Factory of my birthplace which have been always representing a benchmark for sports and competitions worldwide since the early years after the Second World War.
