Non solo automobili - Bozzetti "veloci" di studio per moto custom (2011)

La mia principale esperienza lavorativa si svolse presso una piccola azienda artigiana modenese, costruttrice di veicoli ad uso professionale. Per un certo tempo, uno dei Titolari coltivò l'ambizione di entrare nel campo degli allestimenti personalizzati di autovetture, ma essendo lui appassionato di motocicli, aveva forse come obiettivo principale quello di realizzare una "custom" molto esclusiva.

Un giorno ne parlammo, confrontandoci e, cercando di interpretare le sue ambizioni, andai subito nel mio ufficio; presi matita, penna biro e qualche pennarello a disposizione e abbozzai queste due rapide "visioni". Insomma, sembrava quasi un buon inizio, poi varie difficoltà in cui versava l'Azienda portarono a concentrarsi su ben altre priorità...

 

 

Not only automobiles - "Fast" sketches for custom motorbike (2011)

My main working experience was spent in a small artisan factory close to Modena, which used to manufacture vehicles for professional purposes.

One of the Company Owners had the ambition to manufacture tailor made equipments for cars, but as a deep motorcycle enthusiast, maybe his real dream was to create an own exclusive "custom motorbike".

One day we discussed about this target, comparing our personal points of view, then I wanted immediately to give shape to his ambitions. I went back to my office, I took pencil, pen and some markers available on the desk and made these two fast "visions".

In the end, it almost felt like a good starting point, then the Company had to face various and serious troubles, so the managing priorities were directed to different directions...

Nicola Materazzi - L'anima oltre la meccanica (omaggio all'Ingegnere)

 

Il 24 Agosto 2022 ha lasciato questa vita l'Ingegnere Materazzi, protagonista assoluto di pietre miliari della storia automobilistica, fra competizioni sportive e progetti di vetture ad alte prestazioni.

On August 24th, 2022, Engineer Nicola Materazzi left this life; we remember him as an outstanding author in milestones in the history of sports competitions and high performance cars.

Dai contributi essenziali nello sviluppo della Lancia Stratos, passando poi per il debutto del turbo nelle Ferrari Formula 1 ed arrivando infine a firmare l'intero progetto della F40, nella fase finale di carriera fu protagonista nella rinascita del Marchio Bugatti a Campogalliano, presso Modena, e nella firma della supersportiva Edonis, all'epoca al vertice assoluto di prestazioni fra le auto di serie.

Starting from essential contributions in the development of Lancia Stratos, then going through the early age of turbo charged Ferrari Formula Ones, finally the signature on the whole project of F40, during the late years of his career he was involved in the rebirth of Bugatti Brand in Campogalliano, close to Modena, then he made another whole project for Edonis, that represented the absolute excellence of performance among the production cars.

Era un tecnico formatosi in un'epoca senza i calcolatori, in cui era fondamentale possedere la visione d'insieme dell'intero progetto. Con queste basi, si radicò in lui la concezione in cui dovesse sempre prevalere la qualità meccanica del veicolo, limitando al massimo ogni sofisticazione elettronica.

As a technician, he grew up during an age when calculations were not computer-assisted and it was essential to have a full vision of the whole project. Starting from this culture, he always followed the idea that sports cars must mainly be mechanical machines with very limited electronic features.

A mio parere, non è un punto di vista semplicemente "antico", ma un'idea ancora molto attuale e indispensabile per gli orientamenti nel futuro, anche oltre il campo dell'autoveicolo. Perché l'evoluzione tecnologica, e le sue ripercussioni sulla qualità della vita, devono prima di tutto portare un sostanziale beneficio all'esistenza delle persone e non trasformarsi in strumenti di crescente sottomissione e annullamento delle più nobili sfaccettature della nostra natura.

In my opinion, it's not simply an "old style" way of thinking, but this idea has a strong value nowadays, when we are facing crucial choices about the use of technology in the future, even beyond the vehicles. Because the evolution and its consequences on quality of life, must essentially bring improvements to people's existence without turning itself into intruments of growing submission of the purest parts of our nature.

Attraverso due filmati, ho voluto rendere omaggio alla memoria di quest'uomo, portando un mio personale contributo di testimonianze, il più possibile inedito ed esclusivo.

I made two videos to pay tribute to the memory of this man, making them on personal witnesses, as I wanted to do something unique and exclusive as much as possible.

Progetto "NICOLA" per i 110 anni di Alfa Romeo - Modello 1:18 stampato in 3D

Continua il lavoro sul progetto "NICOLA", un concetto di vettura sportiva di ispirazione Alfa Romeo, il cui nome è un tributo al Fondatore del Marchio. Finalmente, dal mio laboratorio "domestico" di stampa 3D, è uscito il primo prototipo in scala 1:18.

The work on "NICOLA" project goes on; that's a sports car inspired to Alfa Romeo, the name of which is a tribute to the Founder of the Factory. At last we have the first 1:18th scale model, just manufactured by my "home laboratory".

 

L'estetica è la mia proposta di un veicolo che esprima il miglior rapporto fra carico aerodinamico e resistenza, ma nella realtà il progetto è lo spunto per approfondire molteplici temi relativi all'epoca che stiamo vivendo e alla necessità di compiere le scelte più sagge per costruire un avvenire di vero progresso per l'uomo e la sua armonizzazione nel Mondo.

The style is based upon my concept for a vehicle which expresses the best ratio between downforce and drag, but it's just the starting point to get deep into the several meanings of the project. NICOLA is a way to think about the present time along with the need to make the wisest choices, if we aim to build a future with real improvements in human life in better harmony with the World.

Il mio progetto "F-ZERO" (Formula 1 - Anno Zero) è ancora attuale dopo 20 anni

After 20 years, my "F-ZERO" (Formula One-Year Zero) project is still current

 

Durante i video della serie "Aerodinamica segreta della Formula 1", visibile nel canale YouTube "Giovanni Volpi", sono accompagnato dalla presenza di un modello in scala di monoposto da gara, la cui realizzazione mi costò 50 giorni di manodopera.
È la dimostrazione dei contenuti di una tesi, che presentai nel 2002, orientata su una mia idea di riforma del regolamento di progettazione.

During the video series "Aerodinamica segreta della Formula 1" (Secrets of Formula 1 aerodynamics) available on "Giovanni Volpi" YouTube channel, I always appear together with a scale model of a racing car, to manufacture which I spent 50 working days.

It's the summary of a thesis that I presented in 2002, about a personal concept of new rules for engineering in Formula 1.

Un primo, sorprendente riscontro, lo ricevetti 7 anni più tardi, dal cambio regolamentare del 2009, orientato attorno a una filosofia che in alcuni punti coincideva esattamente col mio studio.
Una nuova sorpresa mi arriva ora dall'attuale Ferrari F1-75, le cui fiancate seguono una dinamica di flussi interni ed esterni molto somiglianti alle linee guida del mio progetto dimostrativo.

A first surprising feedback came 7 years later, in 2009, when the new regulation was written around a philosophy which exactly matched my research in some points.

A new "gift" now comes from current Ferrari F1-75, which sides feature a combination of inner and external flows which almost recall the guidelines of my project.

Fra i vari obiettivi, volevo indurre i progettisti a ricercare l'efficienza lavorando sul corpo vettura piuttosto che su complicate appendici esterne e, nella zona delle fiancate, volli dimostrare come si potesse potenziare l'interazione tra i flussi passanti e l'atmosfera esterna.
Almeno, le soddisfazioni morali non mancano.

One of the targets was to show the engineers a way to enhance the efficiency by focusing on the bodywork instead of adding complex assemblies of aerodynamic surfaces. About the sides of the body, I wanted to show a way to improve the interaction between the air passin through and the external atmosphere.

At any rate, I get moral rewards.
